Mansur Khan Pataudi, who served Team India from 1961 to 1975, is an eminent figure in Indian cricket after leaving the world 14 years ago. As per sources, Pataudi’s wife and veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore looked discontent after the reports surfaced that the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) might take a decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy, which has been played since 2007 in the Test format between India and England.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the England and Wales Cricket Board is envisaging to retire the Pataudi Trophy from the upcoming five-match Test series between India and England, which will be played from June 20 to August 4, 2025. Back in 2007, the Pataudi Trophy was awarded to commemorate 75 years of the first Test between India and England, played in 1932. Since the renaming of the rivalry in 2007, both India and England have played five Test series in which England have emerged victorious three times while India have won the trophy only once back in 2007.

As per Hindustan Times, BCCI’s decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy has hurt Sharmila and she remarked, "I haven't heard from them, but the ECB has sent a letter to Saif that they are retiring the trophy. If the BCCI wants to or does not want to remember Tiger's legacy, it is for them to decide."

India will strive to gain the Pataudi Trophy after 18 years

India will endeavour to play an aggressive brand of cricket under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy to win the upcoming five-match Test series and bag the iconic Pataudi Trophy again after 18 years. In 2007, Rahul Dravid guided Team India to the trophy victory in England.

Rohit, who couldn’t be effective as captain and batter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, is highly likely to lead India in the red-ball series against the English side. This time, the veteran will be under immense pressure to deliver impactful results to the team as both leader and batter.
