Team India suffered a blow after batsman Shreyas Iyer dislocated his shoulder while fielding in the series opener against England. Although Iyer could not last long on the crease before being caught by substitute Liam Livingstone at 6. Earlier, while the Indian innings, opener Rohit Sharma got hit on his right elbow in the fourth over in the first ODI against England. The right-hand batsman missed a punch off Mark Wood’s delivery and got hit on his ‘funny bone’.

The 26-year-old Shreyas Iyer was taken off the field in the second innings after he “subluxated” his left shoulder. Later during the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave an update on both the players.

UPDATE: Shreyas Iyer has suffered a labrum tear on his left shoulder and will undergo an operation in a day or two, which could see him miss the entire IPL and sideline him for 3-4 months.

With this news doing rounds, new DC entrant Steven Smith is likely to take the command of the team in IPL 2021. Delhi Capitals CEO Col. Vinod Bisht was lately quoted as saying, "We backed Shreyas when we promoted him to be the captain. Under him, the team came third in 2019 and reached the final in 2020. He is growing as a leader. I am sure the team will continue to do well under his leadership." With Iyer being injured, Smith is likely to takeover the captaincy.

Sam Billings also doubtful for DC

England wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings is also doubtful for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 29-year-old was roped in by Delhi Capitals for whopping Rs 2 crore in the IPL 2021 auction.

Billings suffered an injury during the first ODI against India. The England batsman hurt his collar bone joint while fielding at the boundary. Along with him, skipper Eoin Morgan also spilt the webbing between his right thumb and index finger during the match and was given four stitches.

Debutants Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna starred as India took a 1-0 lead in the first ODI against England. Earlier, opener Shikhar Dhawan’s 98, along with skipper Virat Kohli, wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul and Krunal Pandya’s 50+ mark propelled Team India to put 318 on the scoreboard for England to chase. Krunal went up to score the fastest fifty on debut, whereas pacer Prasidh Krishna became the first cricketer to scalp 4 wickets on ODI debut.
