Former Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton reportedly passed away after an accidental falling at a care home. The football icon died at the age of 86 last month following a long battle with dementia. Charlton is regarded as one of the greatest football players across the globe and won several titles including World Cup, European Cup and Ballon d'Or.
As per reports by DailyMail, an inquest was held on Wednesday, November 1, to find Charlton’s cause of death. The reports suggest that the former English footballer suffered an accidental fall at the Willows care home in Knutsford and was declared dead at Macclesfield General Hospital on Saturday, October 21.
The inquest also heard that the footballer lost his balance while standing up, and in this process, hit a windowsill. While there were no visible injuries during a full body check-up, he was later taken to hospital after swelling on his neck. The tests confirmed that he had fractured his ribs during the fall and was put on life support amid fears of developing pneumonia. The 86-year-old sadly passed away five days later.
After Charlton’s death, Manchester United released a statement, which read, "Manchester United is in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club. Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.”
