The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kickstarted in style with a starry opening ceremony at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, it was the home side, Chennai Super Kings who continued to dominate at their win record at home, extending their head-to-head record to 8-1 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

However, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad who got off to a brilliant start as captain of the side. But in a notable incident, which has been doing rounds, the cameraman continued to pan out at MS Dhoni, who stepped down as captain on the eve of the IPL. Seeing this, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag took time to school the broadcasters for not showing the new CSK skipper.

“Bhai Ruturaj ka bhi chehra dikha do ek do baar (in camera) vo bhi captain hai sirf D honi ka hi chehra dikha raha hai (Brother, please show Ruturaj’s face as well (in camera), he is the captain. The cameraman is showing only Dhoni’s face),” Virender Sehwag said while commentating during the IPL 2024 opener.

Suresh Raina reacts after Virender Sehwag hits as broadcasters

While Virender Sehwag took a dig at the IPL 2024 broadcasters, Suresh Raina, who was also present alongside the former Indian batter, also was on the same page as his compatriot.

“Suresh Raina ji, Chinna Thala, hai?” Sehwag told Raina to which the latter responded, “Lag to raha hai Thala hi kar rahe hai (seems Thala is doing captaincy).”

However, with Gaikwad taking on the captaincy reins from MS Dhoni, one of the greats of the game, had clearly stated that he is not trying to fill in MS Dhoni’s shoes and no one can do it. Speaking at the toss of IPL 2024 opener, the 27-year-old cricketer said, “I want to try and be in my shoes, not fill anybody’s shoes.”
