The Board for Control of Cricket in India ( BCCI) is set to bring some significant changes to Indian domestic cricket based on reco mmendations made by Secretary Jay Shah to the Apex Council. A four-member working group was formed to send a proposal to the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah regarding the possible changes.
The four-man group included India men’s head coach Rahul Dravid, National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman, men’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar and former India pacer Abey Kuruvilla, the BCCI general manager. The quartet met last week here and finalised its proposals that have been submitted to the BCCI.
Split Ranji Trophy with white-ball tournaments after 5 league games
Based on these suggestions, the upcoming domestic season will start with red-ball cricket and the white-ball tournaments – Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy – will be played after the Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy and the first five league games of the Ranji Trophy. The remaining two league matches of the Ranji Trophy and the knockouts will happen towards the end of the season after the white-ball tournaments culminate.
National selectors to pick teams for zonal tournaments
After this new domestic schedule, the group also proposed altering the zonal format for the Duleep Trophy. The tournament will be “featuring four teams, selected by the national selectors,” as per Sportstar. Similarly, the group has also recommended that teams for the women’s inter-zonal tournaments - including one-day, T20 and multi-day formats will be selected by the national selectors.
No toss in C.K. Nayudu Trophy from 2024-25
The group also proposed to take away the toss from the C.K. Nayudu Trophy 2024-25. Instead of the toss, the visiting team will be allowed to elect to bat or field. Further a revised points system is set to be introduced which includes batting and bowling points in addition to innings, lead and wins.
