In the IPL's short history, the tournament was shifted out of the IPL because of the general elections twice. Once in 2009 when the IPL moved to South Africa and then in 2014 when the first leg of the tournament was played in the Middle East. Coming back to this year's IPL, a report by Sri Lankan media house, Sports Pavilion revealed that their Sports Minister requested the BCCI to host a few IPL games.
The post said, "There has been a sudden meeting between Sri Lanka Sports Minister Harin Fernando and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Sri Lankan Sports Minister Harin Fernando said that he has requested to hold few matches of the upcoming IPL tournament in Sri Lanka."

But a day before this report, ANI shared a BCCI source addressing the possibility of hosting the tournament outside India. The source stated, “There is nothing like that, to shift the tournament outside the country, as the general election will also be at the same time. If any state doesn’t want to host the match at that time, with any justified reason, the match could be shifted to another venue.”
