The highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024 is scheduled to start in November, and the predictions for the series have already sparked drama. Basit Ali , the former Pakistan cricketers have called out Nathan Lyon for his bold prediction that Australia will win the series 5-0 against India. Ali called Lyon's statement "stupid" during a discussion on YouTube.
Responding to a question from the former Australian player Brad Haddin, Lyon made his prediction about the series, saying, ”My prediction is 5-0 to Australia.” on the Willow Talk podcast. However, Basit Ali disagreed and said such comments are not suitable for current players. He also urged Ravichandran Ashwin to reply back, suggesting that Ashwin should say India will beat Australia 5-0.
Australia will defeat India only by words: Basit Ali reacts to Nathan Lyon’s statement
"I will only say one thing about Nathan Lyon's stupid statement that Australia will defeat India by six Tests, but only by words. In the past two series, India have dominated Australia. Such comments don't suit cricketers. Ricky Ponting or former cricketers can make such statements. I request Ashwin to reply back and say that India will defeat Australia by 5-0," said Basit.
However, Nathan Lyon remains confident in his prediction, expressing strong belief in his team's ability to win. Meanwhile, Australian batsman Travis Head shared a different perspective in an interview with Start Sports, saying, "I don't feel like they're my favorites." I just feel like we play them enough, play them lots. And, I guess, the last couple of years, I've been in nice form. So yeah, being able to play well, it's always nice. It's not hard to get up for the contest. It's hugely competitive. Yeah, it's easier to get up for the game. So I wouldn't say they're my favorites."
