Sumit Nagal scripted history by becoming the first Indian men’s singles player to reach the main draw of the Monte Carlo Masters in 42 years at the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. With that, the 26-year-old is going to earn at least ₹20 lakh for playing in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters against the Argentinian opponent, Federico Coria.
In the second and final round of the Monte Carlo Masters qualifying stage, Sumit Nagal got the better of Facunda Diaz Acosta of Argentina in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, to achieve history. He is the first Indian in over four decades to be the main draw of the Monte Carlo Masters after Ramesh Krishnan achieved the feat in 1982, losing in the first round of the tournament.
Prior to winning against the Argentinian, Sumit Nagal had beaten the Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the qualifying stage of the Monte Carlo Masters. Before the year 2024, he had played in Monaco just once, exiting the first round of qualifying three years ago.
Moreover, Sumit Nagal is in the midst of a very good year in the sport, reaching the second round of the Australian Open after defeating Alexander Bublik. The Indian had also reached the main draw of the Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago, losing in the first round to Milos Raonic.
