Indian tennis pro Sumit Nagal announced his withdrawal from the Davis Cup tie against Sweden on Monday, September 2, due to a back injury. Notably, Nagal recently lost his first round singles clash against Tallon Griekspoor at the ongoing US Open. Nagal, who played all four Majors this year and touched the career-best ranking of 73, said that he was compelled to withdraw from the tie due to a back strain.
Not only this, but the injury also compelled Nagal to pull out of the doubles of the ongoing Majors in New York. The AITA announced that Manas Dhamne has been brought in as a replacement. Nagal took to X to announce, “I was really looking forward to representing India in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden. However, due to a back issue that’s been bothering me for the next two weeks, doctors have advised me to rest for the next two weeks, leaving me without enough time to prepare and compete in Sweden. This same issue also led to my withdrawal from the US Open doubles.”
AITA released their official statement and said, “The decision to replace Sumit Nagal with the tennis sensation Manas Dhamne, was taken after a thorough assessment of performances by the chairman of the selection committee, Nandan Bal, along with captain Rohit Rajpal and coach Ashutosh Singh.”
Manas currently trains at the Piatti Centre in Italy and reached a career-best junior rank of 43 last year. He has been competing in the men’s circuit regularly for the last few months.
