The Indian team has been handed a setback with injuries piling up in the camp. While Hardik Pandya has been out of action since the ODI World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav and Ruturaj Gaikwad are few more additions to it. Off late, the recent T20I skipper of Team India, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to sit out for an elongated period.

As per reports surfacing, while the prolific T20 batter will miss the T20I series against Afghanistan due to an ankle injury, he is will also miss the entire domestic season. The 33-year-old moreover will be missing the initial phase of IPL after being afflicted by sports hernia.

“Suryakumar Yadav was recently diagnosed with sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two-three days, he will fly for Munich, Germany, to get operated for it. It means that he certainly won’t be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL,” a BCCI source was quoted by TOI.

“With the T20 World Cup in June, Surya will be given all the time to recover properly. He is crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup,” the source further added.  

It is to be noted that Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul too had suffered from a similar injury and later in 2022 underwent a surgery in Germany.

What is sports hernia?

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, sports hernia is not actually hernia. “The condition’s true name is athletic pubalgia,” it states. It further says that the symptoms are similar but, “the pain and pressure from sports hernias are caused by torn tendons that attach to the pelvis instead of an abdominal muscle separation and protrusion of intestine or other soft tissue.”
