India announced their 17-member squad for the 50-over Asia Cup 2023. The marquee tournament which will be played from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will see India start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Kandy.

Just moments after the squad was named, while several were left in awe of the inclusion of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, some were even shocked to see the snubbing of Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, to name a few. Among many such who questioned the selection of the 17-member squad was former India cricketer Madan Lal. The former cricketer opined that even the selectors aren’t sure of KL Rahul’s fitness as Ajit Agarkar revealed that he might miss a few matches with a niggle.

The 72-year-old who questioned the squad selection with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul not proving match fitness at international level after long injury layoffs. “I don’t think the selectors and team management are still sure whether Kl Rahul is fit or not. What injury or niggle? They should have specified that. They have kept Shreyas Iyer. There’s still no surety about his fitness. They haven’t played any competitive cricket. They should have been picked after they had proved their match fitness,” Madan Lal told Aaj Tak as quoted by CricTracker.

The thing that surprised me the most is Yuzvendra Chahal: Madan Lal

The former Indian cricketer also spoke about the omission of Yuzvendra Chahal from the 17-member squad. He pointed that Chahal is a key wicket-taker for India and added that his omission is a surprise.

“The thing that has surprised me the most is Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence. They said there should only be one wrist spinner. Chahal is a genuine wicket-taker and a match-winner. His absence was surprising ,” he said. It is to be noted that India’s bowling attack in the Asia Cup 2023 includes the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Md. Shami, Md. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.
