Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar slammed modern-day batting icon Virat Kohli after he got out on nine runs in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024. On Thursday, June 27, the Men in Blue squared off against reigning champions England for the second knockout clash of the World Cup 2024 to book a final date with South Africa. In a rain-interrupted game at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, English skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and invited Rohit Sharma and Co. to bat first.
Former India skipper Virat Kohli, who opened along with skipper and seasoned opener Rohit Sharma, failed to make a mark in the game and got out on nine runs. The star batter got bowled off a Reece Topley delivery in the third over. Kohli was expected to come up with a decent performance in the crucial match, and the cricketer losing his wicket cheaply didn’t sit well with fans and pundits alike.
The cricketer-turned-commentator slammed the batter for the way he lost his wicket. While commentating during the game, he said, “There was no balance on the ball Virat Kohli got out.” Notably, Kohli has faced a major slump in performance in the ongoing tournament and could only score 75 runs.
It is to be noted that the 2007 T20 World Champions remain unbeaten in the current season and made it to the top four seamlessly. Earlier during the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma said, “We understand the challenge of playing a tournament like this, a lot of travel and logistics. It's a chance to play some good cricket. We don't want to think too far ahead, stay in the moment and let your game do the talking.”
