Wasim Akram, the Pakistan cricketing legend, made a cheeky remark on the 15-member Indian T20 World Cup 2024 squad in regards to how none of them reached the IPL final just a few days ago. The 57-year-old hilariously stated that the Indian players were “thinking ahead” in terms of focusing their attention on the upcoming ICC tournament, and it could prove to be a “blessing in disguise” for them.
Notably, the IPL 2024 final was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, May 26, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In a short turnaround, just five days later, the T20 World Cup 2024 is set to begin in the USA and the Caribbean.
During his interview with Sportskeeda, Wasim Akram addressed the situation surrounding the Indian players, in regards to the break in between the IPL and the T20 World Cup. He said, “Well, now at least none of them will have to say that they are tired. They were thinking ahead, what is the point of reaching the final? India is more important, we will play with the country. But it could be a blessing in disguise for India.”
“We discussed in the previous show that I was worried that they might be tired, and they will be tired, no doubt. Even America is not their road. I think Pakistan's first match is Dallas if I remember. Now they will go and play there, one or two practice matches. It will be okay, I suppose. It is T20, the boys will recover, nowadays fitness levels are very high,” Wasim Akram added.
Except for Virat Kohli, the rest of the players in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 have reached the USA. They will be playing their first warm-up match against Bangladesh at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 1.
