Australia captain Pat Cummins secured the second-highest bid in the IPL 2024 auction. Cummins became the second most expensive buy in the history of the Indian Premier League after he was signed by the SunRisers Hyderabad. Cummins also became the first player to cross the INR 20 crore mark in the cash-rich league’s history. The ODI World Cup 2023 winning captain surpassed England cricketer Sam Curran’s record. Curran was sold to Punjab Kings for INR 18.50 crore in the IPL 2023 auction.

Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh still holds the record for the most expensive Indian player at Rs 16 crore when he was sold to Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the 2015 season. Cummin’s bid war started between the joint-most successful teams Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Just when the bid raised to ₹4.80 crore, Royal Challengers Bangalore and SurnRisers Hyderabad entered the bidding war.

Bangalore and Hyderabad fought for the World Cup-winning captain when the latter made the final call. The Aussie has played 42 games and holds 45 wickets at an economy rate of 8.54 as well as 359 runs. Cummins’ bid sparked a meme fest on social media, where netizens reacted to the Aussie becoming the most expensive IPL purchase.

The CWC 2023 winners achieved the highest bids in the IPL 2024 Auction as opening batter Travis Head went for ₹6.8 crores, followed by Patt Cummins, who became the first person to cross the ₹20cr mark, to SRH at ₹20.50 crores, and Mitchell Starc to KKR for record ₹24.75 crores.
