Ranji Trophy is often conside red the gateway to the Indian cricket team, but this hasn’t been the case lately. Since the introduction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, team management has often preferred the players who have performed remarkably well in the toughest cricket league.
But this isn’t the case necessarily. There were many Ranji stalwarts before the IPL, who never represented their nation in their professional careers. These players scored runs in heaps and scalped enough wickets to get a ticket to play for India, but it was never meant to be.
Here, we will look at the 5 Ranji greats who never played for India.
Amol Muzumdar:
Amol is a certified Ranji legend who has amassed over 10,000+ runs playing for Mumbai, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh between 1993 and 2013. On his Mumbai (Bombay then) debut, he scored the then-world record of 260 unbeaten in the pre-quarter-final game against Haryana.
He has 11,167 runs in the 171 games he played, with an average of 48.13. He recorded 30 centuries and 60 half-centuries, with the highest score of 260 on debut. Despite these impressive records, he never made it to the Indian team due to the legendary Indian line-up during his career. With Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and then Virender Sehwag in the fore, he wasn’t to make it to the highest level.
