Virat Kohli, the star Indian batter, achieved a new milestone in his international career, becoming the fastest to 27000 runs in international cricket, breaking the previous record set by Sachin Tendulkar. The 35-year-old reached the milestone moment during the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh at the Green Park in Kanpur. Following no play for the last two days, India took a lead of the 52 runs on first innings during day four in the second Test. After bundling out Bangladesh for 233 runs in the first innings, India declared on 285/9 as Yashasvi Jaiswal top scoring with 72(51) runs, which included 12 fours and two sixes.

In the Indian innings, Virat Kohli got a quickfire knock of 47 runs off 35 balls, hitting four fours and a six in the process. During his stay at the crease, Kohli achieved the milestone of 27000 across three formats in international cricket, going past Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest ever to do it. Notably, Tendulkar completed his 27000 runs in 623 innings, while Kohli took just 594 innings to achieve the big feat. The right-hander has now 27012 runs from 535 matches across formats in his international career, and is also the fourth highest run-scorer of all-time at the highest level.

Illustrious list of batters reaching 27000 runs in international cricket

There have been only four batters who have gone past 27000-run mark in the history of international cricket over the course of last 147 years. Before Virat Kohli reached the coveted mark earlier today, Sachin Tendulkar had Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara in the illustrious list of batters to make such number of runs at the highest level, and coincidentally, all these four cricketers captained their respective national teams.

India take two quick wickets in Bangladesh second innings after securing 52-run lead

After the Indian bowlers put an end to the Bangladesh first innings on 233 runs, their batters got a flying start in the first innings as Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed three fours in the first over by Hasan Mahmud. In the next over, Indian captain Rohit Sharma also started his innings with a six. The opening pair stitched together a 55-run stand in just 3.5 overs before Rohit was dismissed for a quickfire 23(11) runs.

From that point onwards, Yashasvi Jaiswal took the Indian first innings forward, and got a well-made 72(51) runs. After that, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul added 87 runs for the fifth wicket. Kohli got out after scoring 47 runs off 35 balls, hitting four fours and a six in his innings. Shortly after, KL Rahul came up with his 14th Test fifty, scoring 68 runs off 43 balls with seven four and two sixes. When India reached 285/9, Rohit Sharma decided to declare their first innings with a lead of 52 runs. In their second innings, Bangladesh have scored 26/2 at the close of play on day four, trailing the hosts by 26 runs.
