Warwickshire has signed Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for the 2023 T20 blast as a second overseas player after Pakistan speedster Hasan Ali. The 34-year-old is expected to join Warwickshire after IPL 2023.
Meanwhile, Bears coach Mark Robinson told BCC Radio WM that Maxwell has an impressive stature in the T20 format and he can inspire youngsters to grow as a player. “To get a player of this stature is something that really excites us. We are really excited to have somebody with his global reputation but also somebody that can help influence our younger players and help us grow as a team,” Robinson said. He further claimed that Maxwell is an absolute competitor and a great match-winner.
Notably, the club finished top of the North Group in 2022, while adapting an aggressive style which also saw them post a then-record English domestic T20 total of 261 for 2 vs Nottinghamshire.
Maxwell, who is regarded as one of the most explosive batters in the T20 format, had previous spells in England with Hampshire, Surrey, Yorkshire, and most recently Lancashire in 2019. Notably, Maxwell will make a comeback in competitive cricket with IPL. The Aussie all-rounder has been out of cricketing action after he fractured his leg in an accident at a friend’s birthday party in November.
The Aussie all-rounder will play in IPL 2023 for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has played 355 T20 innings with an average of 27.79 and a strike rate of 151.07 and holds the record for the highest score in the Big Bash League with 154 off 64 deliveries for Melbourne Stars in January 2022.
“I can't wait to get stuck into a new challenge with the Bears. Edgbaston is a great place to play cricket with extremely passionate fans and I am looking forward to joining an exciting list of players,” Maxwell said.
