England and Spain's women's teams are squaring off against each other in the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 final at the Accor Stadium in Sydney on Sunday. Both teams are facing each other for the first time in the tournament and will look to win their maiden women's World Cup title. However, Spain took the lead in the all-important clash as captain Olga Carmona gave the much-needed breakthrough to La Roja.
While England midfielder Lauren James started off the bench after missing two games, the quarter-final, and semi-final due to her two-game suspension for stomping on a Nigeria player in the round of 16. Reigning two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, on the other hand, was dropped from Spain's starting line-up.
In the 29th minute of the game, captain Carmona opened the scoring for Spain from winger Mariona Caldentey's assist. The left-back powered a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner to strike the first blow.
