American tennis pro, Coco Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka to claim her maiden Grand Slam title, early on Sunday, 10 September. The American teenage sensation came back from behind to put up a gusty performance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and win her maiden US Open title. The 19-year-old beat her Belarusian opponent 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes.

 

The sixth seeded, who advanced into the final as an underdog against the hard-hitter, who will become the World No. 1 when the new rankings come on September 11 at the conclusion of US Open 2023. The American tennis ace broke down in tears after claiming her title as she became the first American  teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999.

 

Notably, the young prodigy also credited the Williams sisters - Serena and Venus Williams as the reason of her US Open triumph. “They’re the reason why I have this trophy today. They’ve allowed me to believe in this dream. Growing up, there weren’t too many black tennis players dominating the sport. It was just them at the time that I can remember, & obviously more came because of their legacy. It made the dream more believable,” she said during her post-match presentation.

 

“You look back at the history of Indian Wells with Serena, all she had to go through. Venus, fighting for equal pay. It’s crazy & it’s an honour to be in that same lineup as them,” she further added.
