This also marks a possible end to Cristiano Ronaldo's sub-par run in football's greatest show. Ronaldo's great legacy now will include huge albatross of not scoring a single in the knockout stages of World Cups for the last five editions.
After the game, the Portuguese coach Fernando Santos talked about his team's morale after the loss. He stated that the players were extremely confident about winning but couldn't execute their plans to perfection.
He said, "It took us a long time to get into the game. The players wanted to, but they couldn't. The players were very confident, they wanted it a lot, but the truth is that we weren't able to show all of our game. We couldn't make goal-scoring chances. Leaving the World Cup always hurts."
Santos then expressed how the dressing room is completely devastated as they were extremely confident and had the ability to win the World Cup. He said, "The locker room is really down."
"We are devastated. I was sure that with the work and the quality of the players that we could have given the Portuguese people some joy - that we could have made it to the final and won it. That's why I and everyone else is devastated," Santos further continued.
