Devdutt Padikkal, the Indian Test debutant, took a smart tumbling catch from Tom Hartley to hand Ravichandran Ashwin his first wicket in the 100th Test match. At the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala, the Indian off-spinner had to wait till the second session on Day 1 to open his wicket tally, but it was worth it.
It was a flighted delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin, which Tom Hartley tried to slog across the line, but he only managed to mistime it towards the long-on region. Devdutt Padikkal, who was underneath the high ball, had to backtrack a few steps before completing the catch while tumbling down just inside the boundary rope.
In the same over, Ravichandran Ashwin got Mark Wood out on the second ball after the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, completed an easy catch at first slip. The impressive bowling spell from the 37-year-old in the second session on Day 1, was one of many he has bowled throughout his illustrious cricketing career.
Notably, before the toss on Day 1 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, Ravichandran Ashwin was felicitated for playing in his 100th Test match. The Indian off-spinner also handed the debut Test cap to Devdutt Padikkal, the left-handed batter, who replaced the injured Rajat Patidar in the playing XI.
