Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez consoled Ecuador’s Alexander Dominguez after the former’s win on penalties in Copa America 2024 quarterfinals. Argentina made it to the semifinals of the tournament after beating their counterparts 4-2 on penalty following a 1-1 draw in Texas. The game saw Lionel Messi missing his side’s first penalty, which was later spared by Martinez, who went on to save Ecuador’s first two penalties. 

Argentine Lisandro Martinez gave his side lead 10 minutes before the half time, but Rodriguez equalised the tally with a brilliant header in injury time by the end of the second half. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winners went first in the shootout, where Messi tried a Panenka and hit the crossbar. Later, Argentina goalie went on to save penalties from Angel Mena and Alan Minda. After Julian Alvarez and Alexis Mac Allister successfully converted the penalties, Nicolas Otamendi hit the winning penalty.

After the defending champions took down their counterparts to seal a spot in the Copa America 2024 semi-finals, Emiliano Martinez was seen consoling La Tricolor’s Alexander Dominguez. Following the game, the 31-year-old was seen walking to Dominguez and consoling him. The video of the same went viral on social media in no time and the footballer was lauded for his sportsman spirit. 

After the match, he said, “I wasn’t ready to go home. This team deserved to advance. They complicated us a lot. They played a great match, very physical. We knew they were one of the top rivals in Copa América.”  Argentina will now be up against Canada in the semifinals, who are coming on the back of a 4-3 win over Venezuela in a penalty shootout.
