Ireland’s Katie McCabe gave her side the lead through a stunning shot that went directly from the corner into the goal. The Arsenal fullback left the stadium shocked to give her country an unexpected lead over a strong Canadian side. It was also remarkable just how early into the game the goal came, at just around the fourth minute.

When McCabe lined up to take the corner kick, the Canadian players set up a defensive guard, expecting the left back to cross the ball and look for one of her teammates. Irish players were even unmarked outside the box as the Canadian women’s team dedicated all their strength to prevent an offensive header on target. It turned out in vain, however, when McCabe curled the ball over the players’ heads and arced it into the net.

The angle seemed almost ludicrous, and it is sure to be remembered as one of the goals of the tournament. Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan just about missed getting a hand to it, likely due to her not expecting the 27-year-old Irish player’s audacious attempt on goal.

Canada strike back, Ireland qualification hopes in jeopardy

Despite the magnificent strike, the Canadian women’s team once again proved their mettle by not only equalizing but also coming back to take the lead thanks to goals by Adriana Leon (53’) and Megan Connolly (own goal, 45+5’).

The Canada team is currently first in group B, if the result stays at 2-1, having drawn versus Nigeria. Australia can overtake the side with a win against Nigeria, however, with the game yet to play. Ireland, unfortunately, looks like they are out of contention to qualify for the playoff rounds, having lost already to Australia and being on track to lose to Canada.

Australia take on Nigeria tomorrow, in what is sure to be a match that will prove decisive in the outcome of the group. Right now, all three of Canada, Australia, and Nigeria seem to be in with a shout of qualifying. The World Cup is always a unique tournament, and results never seem to quite go as expected.
