West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos refused to celebrate his winning header against his former club Arsenal in a Premier League fixture. West Ham registered a 2-0 win over their counterparts in the London derby on December 29, Friday (IST). With the defeat, Arsenal missed the chance to be on the top of the standings, courtesy of Tomas Soucek's controversial first-half strike followed by Dinos Mavropanos’ header after halftime.

The Gunners dominated the first half of the clash, but West Ham’s Tomas Soucek struck just 13 minutes into the London derby at the Emirates. Soucek was assisted by Jarrod Bowen, but it was not clear whether or not the ball had gone out of play. In the 55th minute of the game, David Moyes’ side doubled their lead, with the help of Mavropanos’ header. After scoring the winning header for his side, the 26-year-old refused to celebrate against his former club.

The Greek international preferred to celebrate silently though as he held his hands up. Mavropanos’ move came out of respect as he played eight games with the Gunners. Mavropanos left Arsenal in 2022 and joined Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart. He moved back to England this summer and to move to the Hammers.

Coming back to the game, West Ham could have made their goal count three but Said Benrahma had a penalty saved by David Raya in added time after a foul by former West Ham captain Declan Rice. Arsenal ended the game with 30 points but missed their chances to find the net. They lie two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, while West Ham sit at the sixth spot.
