Kylian Mbappe scored a crucial equaliser for Real Madrid in the derby against Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, to rescue a point for the Galacticos, which helped keep the first place in the La Liga standings. After Atletico Madrid took the lead in the first half through a controversial penalty converted by Julian Alvarez, it was the French forward, who scored his 16th La Liga goal of the season, to secure a draw for Real Madrid.

Notably, Diego Simone’s side took the lead in the 35th minute when the referee awarded a penalty, following a video assistant referee (VAR) monitor check, adjudicating that Aurelien Tchouameni fouled Samuel Lino. It led to Julian Alvarez chipping the ball down the middle with the “Panenka” from the spot, and it went into the back of the net after goal-keeper Thibaut Courtois dived past it.

Kylian Mbappe has scored 16 goals in 21 La Liga matches this season

In the 50th minute of the contest, Kylian Mbappe levelled the score at 1-1 after reacting the quickest to Jude Bellingham’s attempt at goal, which was cleared into his path by an Atletico Madrid defender. Real Madrid pushed for the winner late in the second half as Jude Bellingham headed one into the crossbar apart from making goal-keeper Jan Oblak make a smart save.

He was quoted as saying, as per The National, “The team is disappointed because they think they deserved more.. but we're happy because we're still leaders. In the second half we had total control, we had a lot of chances.”

Moreover, Real Madrid are still in the lead in the La Liga standings with 50 points in 23 matches, a point ahead of Atletico Madrid, while Barcelona are a further four points behind, but with a game in hand.
