In his return to the Indian playing XI, Mohammed Shami picked up a vital five-wicket haul for the Men in Blue, to help them secure an all-important win against New Zealand in the top of the table clash for the ODI World Cup 2023, on Sunday, October 22. After receiving the player of the match award for his impressive performance, the 33-year-old had a field day in the press conference, where he savagely trolled some of the journalists for their out of the box questions.
Mohammed Shami was drafted into the playing XI by the Indian team management in place of Shardul Thakur, to bolster the bowling lineup, in absence of Hardik Pandya, the recognised sixth option. The Indian fast bowler started his first spell in an impressive manner, picking up the New Zealand opener Will Young for 17, getting him to chop the ball onto his stumps.
In the second powerplay stage of the Blackcaps innings, Mohammed Shami broke the big partnership of 159 runs between Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra for the third wicket, making the latter sky the ball straight to the long on fielder Shubman Gill for 75. During the third powerplay stage, he castled Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry cheaply, in consecutive deliveries, to find himself on a hat-trick.
The last over of the New Zealand effort saw Mohammed Shami get rid of Daryl Mitchell, who put together an massive innings of 130 on the board, getting him caught out via Virat Kohli at the deep midwicket boundary. The Men in Blue chased down the target of 274 with two overs to spare, thanks to an impressive 95 from Virat Kohli.
After Mohammed Shami was adjudicated as the player of the match for his five-wicket haul, he had fun at the press conference at the expense of some journalists. When one of them asked him to talk about his five wickets against New Zealand also, the Indian fast bowler said with a straight face, “Ask me questions about it then.”

One of the other questions from a journalist was about how Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and Lockie Ferguson, is the best pace attack here, for these conditions. It led to Mohammed Shami dropping a fierce retort, “You have seen the results, which pace attack is better.”
