Najmul Hossain Shanto, the middle order batter of Bangladesh, slipped his way to an unfortunate run out against Afghanistan in the all-important Asia Cup 2023 Group B clash. On September 3, Sunday, the run out incident happened with the 25-year-old, after he had completed his second century in the ODI format, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

For the unversed, the captain of Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan decided to bat first in a must win game against Afghanistan, after winning the toss. The openers Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz gave a flying start to the team, putting together 60 runs in the first powerplay.

When Afghanistan picked up two quick wickets to peg back Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto walked out to the middle to put together a massive partnership of 194 runs, before Mehidy Hasan Miraz retired hurt. He had smashed a six against Mujeeb Ur Rahman after completing his century, but in the process of playing that stroke, his left hand was injured.

Later in the same 43rd over, Najmul Hossain Shanto also brought up his three figure milestone, for the second time in his 50 overs career. But, soon after, he played a reverse sweep off Mujeeb Ur Rahman, took off for the run, slipped in the middle of the pitch when Najibullah Zadran fielded the ball, with the wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz doing the rest.

Then, the captain Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim scored runs quickly in the death overs, to propel the Bangladesh score to 334/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Afghanistan will now have to bat out of their skins to win this match, to keep their hopes of reaching the Super Four stage in the Asia Cup 2023 intact.
