Newcastle United clinched their first domestic trophy in 70 years after defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final at the Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, March 16. After winning their first trophy in English football since 1955, the Newcastle United players, along with their manager Eddie Howe and his support staff, celebrated the big moment in style in front of thousands of travelling fans inside the stadium, while the fans at Tyneside rejoiced on the streets.
Dan Burn opened the scoring for Newcastle United on the night in the 45th minute with a towering header, directing an inch-perfect delivery from a Kieran Trippier corner into the back of the net. At the start of the second half, Alexander Isak doubled the lead for the Magpies in the 52nd minute by clinically finishing a Jacob Murphy knockdown, and while Liverpool got a goal in the stoppage time of the match through Federico Chiesa, it wasn’t enough for them.

With that, Newcastle United won their first domestic trophy since the FA Cup success in 1955, while their last major piece of silverware came in 1969, when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Since then, the players and fans of the Tyneside club have been celebrating their success like no tomorrow, with the club’s official social media accounts covering every aspect of the victory.
Moreover, as far as Liverpool are concerned, the loss in the EFL Cup final is a major blow especially after they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) earlier in the same week by Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds were already eliminated from the FA Cup by Plymouth Argyle, which means that their only shot at winning the trophy after a consistent season is the Premier League, where they have a 12-point lead over Arsenal in first place.
