The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 clash between Australia and Afghanistan saw a controversial decision regarding a catch taken by Marcus Stoinis to dismiss Rashid Khan in the 48th over. Batting first Afghanistan had a decent effort anchored by Ibrahim Zadran, who became the youngest player to score a World Cup century against Australia.

As the first innings neared its end, Rashid Khan came out all guns blazing and managed to find a few quick boundaries. Coming in the 48th over, Afghans targetted  Mitchell Starc and conceded a six courtesy of Zadran. T hen on the fifth ball of the over, Khan tried a cut shot which was taken by Marcus  Stoinis, who came running in from the deep, to complete a fine catch.

Stoinis seemed confident that he had completed the catch cleanly but after several checks by the third umpire, he then concluded that the ball bounced onto the ground and into Stoinis's hands, leaving the Aussies in shock. Capitalising on this moment, Afghanistan 30 runs in the final two overs to post a total of 291 runs.
