Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri had some emotional words for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for his performance against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. Shastri was called by the Indian fielding coach T Dilip for presenting the Fielding Medal which was won by Pant for his three crucial catches which were vital in India's victory.
This tradition of the 'fielding award' was started in last year's ODI World Cup 2023 where India had an unbeaten run before losing to Australia in the final. The award was restarted for the T20 World Cup as well with Mohammed Siraj winning the medal for the first match against Ireland.
Then for the game against Pakistan Rishabh Pant was deemed the winner and Ravi Shastri was invited to present the award. Before the former Indian coach gave Pant his award, he had some emotional words about the 25-year-old's comeback after his horrific accident in December 2022.
From the jaws of death, you can snatch a win: Shastri to Rishabh Pant
Ravi Shastri said, "All I say for Rishabh. Brilliant performance. I had tears in my eyes when I heard about his accident. When I saw him in hospital, it was worse. And then for him to come back from there and be back in the A-zone playing one of the biggest games, India vs Pakistan, is heartwarming," said Shastri.
"Batting, everybody knew. What you're capable of, the X-factor you have. But your wicketkeeping and range of movement that you have quickly got back in after the operation, is a tribute for how much you worked hard. Not just for yourself, it's an inspiration to millions around the globe. From adversity, from the jaws of death, you can snatch a win as well. So well done, keep up the good work," said Shastri.
