Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Rishabh Pant on Saturday, September 21 scored his first Test hundred since his return to red-ball cricket after December 2022. Pant, who marked his return to Test cricket after over 20 months, reached his ton off 124 deliveries on Day 3 of the first Test in Chennai. Moreover, with his sixth Test hundred, Pant also equalled former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, MS Dhoni’s record of most hundreds in Test by Indian wicketkeepers.
Watch the moment when Rishabh Pant equalled MS Dhoni’s record of most Test 100s by Indian keepers:
Soon after reaching his hundred, Pant opted for a low key celebration, but his teammates in the dugout stood up to acknowledge his gritty knock. KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Gautam Gambhir, Morne Morkel, among others stood up to applaud the young wicketkeeper-batter. During his stay for 128 deliveries, Pant’s innings of 109 runs included 13 fours and four maximums. The 26-year-old also reached third place to hit most sixes (41) in the World Test Championships overall, with Ben Stokes sitting at the top with 81 sixes, followed by Rohit Sharma (52).
However, Pant’s stay in the middle was cut short by Mehidy Hasan Miraz pulling off a regulation catch. Pant, who reached his Test ton in the 55th over, was dismissed in the very next over with Miraz getting him out on the third delivery of his over. On his return back to the pavilion, Pant was seen blowing a kiss to the heavens as he got a deserved standing ovation.
