During their first group stage match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 versus Bangladesh, Indian captain Rohit Sharma dropped a sitter of a catch at slip on hat-trick ball from Axar Patel, denying him a golden chance to take three wickets in three consecutive balls in the coveted tournament. After taking the wickets of Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim on back-to-back deliveries, Axar Patel found himself on the cusp of history, but Rohit Sharma’s mistake in the field didn’t help his cause.
After Indian pacers Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana gave a fantastic start to the team in their first spells, Axar Patel was introduced into the attack in the ninth over of the Bangladesh innings. The left-arm spinner struck on the second ball of his spell, getting the wicket of impressive left-handed batter Tanzid Hasan for 25 off 25, who was nicked off through to the wicket-keeper KL Rahul.
On the very next ball of the over, veteran Mushfiqur Rahim found KL Rahul behind the stumps without troubling the scorers, which meant that Axar Patel was a step closer to getting a hat-trick. Jaker Ali was on strike on the next ball, and on a flighted delivery outside the off stump, he could only move forward a touch before nicking the ball through to first slip, where Indian captain Rohit Sharma dropped a simple catch.
