After opting to bat first, the hosts posted 445 runs on the board and then bundled out the visitors for the score of 319 on Day 3. While the hosts added to their 126-run lead and then put up 557-run target for the Ben Stokes-led side to chase.
While it was Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, who scored centuries in the first inning with half-century from debutant Sarfaraz Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal etched record books with his double ton and half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan in the second inning. Sarfaraz’s fifty came in the 96th over, Jaiswal got his double ton in the 97th over.
The 22-year-old, who hails from Uttar Pradesh brought up a Jude Bellingham-like celebration as he reached his double ton off 231 deliveries, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma was also seen emulating Jaiswal’s celebration in the dressing room, video of which is now doing round on social media. With his unbeaten knock of 214, Jaiswal became the third Indian batter to hit successive double century after Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli. He also became the sixth batter to core a double ton in second inning. Jaiswal, with his inning consisting of 12 maximums, became the player to hit most sixes in a Test inning, surpassing Wasim Akram’s 12, which came against Zimbabwe in 1996.
