Ruben Amorim, the newly appointed head coach of Manchester United, gave his first public interview to the club’s website after arriving in the Northwest of England on Monday, November 11. When the Portuguese was asked about his reason for joining Manchester United, he spoke about feeling a ‘connection’ with the club before vowing to do everything it takes to bring back the glory days for the English giants, who haven’t won the Premier League in over a decade.

Notably, Ruben Amorim is replacing Erik ten Hag, who was the Manchester United manager for more than two seasons, and the seventh manager of the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. None of the last six managers have been able to be in the job for three full seasons, or take the club beyond the last eight of the UEFA Champions League, while their best Premier League finish has been in second place on multiple occasions.

I think I felt a connection with the club: Ruben Amorim on joining Manchester United

The former manager of Sporting Lisbon addressed the reasoning behind becoming the new head coach of Manchester United, and said, “First of all, I think I felt a connection with the club. And when I say with the club, everybody knows Manchester United. But I feel the connection with the people in the club and that is very important for me because I want to work with people that I like and I feel a connection.”

Ruben Amorim alluded to the tough times for Manchester United in 1958 with the Munich air disaster, following which they managed to rise as one in the subsequent years. He remarked, 'You see the trophies and you see the tragedy that we have as a club. You understand the history, after the crash, then we were European champions. It is important to put this kind of strength in the team.”

In his closing remarks, the 39-year-old was confident about doing all it takes to bring glory days back to Manchester United. “I will try to do everything to put this club in the place that it belongs. And I believe a lot that we are going to succeed,” he added.
