Ever since the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign began for India at home, the performances of the Men in Blue have been exemplary on the field, winning seven matches in a row. After their massive victory by 302 runs against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the tradition of awarding the ‘Best Fielder’ medal continued in the Indian dressing room and this time Shreyas Iyer was declared the winner by the Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar.

The one-sided contest between India and Sri Lanka started with the batters Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer putting up big fifties, to help the hosts put a massive score of 357/8 on the board in their allotted 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah picked up the first wicket on the first ball of their bowling innings, trapping Pathum Nissanka lbw without troubling the scorers.
In the next over, Mohammed Siraj took the wickets of Dimuth Karunaratne lbw, before Sadeera Samarawickrama found Shreyas Iyer in the third slip, both getting out for zero. Then, Mohammed Shami came into the attack to pick up a five-wicket haul, to help India bowl out Sri Lanka for just 55 runs before 20 overs were completed.

The final moments of the match involved Shreyas Iyer completing the smart catch of Dilshan Madushanka off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja, running more than 10 metres to the left from mid-on position. Afterwards, the Indian fielding coach T Dilip shared his words of appreciation in the dressing room about the performance from the team in the field, before the proceedings to award the ‘Best Fielder’ medal began.
