During the th ird and final ODI of the series between India and Australia, Smriti Mandhana dropped a sitter off a catch of Ellyse Perry at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The ongoing series has been a forgettable one for the Indian vice-captain and the rest of the players in the field, who are dropping catches with regularity match after match.

In the 32nd over of the Australian innings, with the scorecard reading 201/1, the Indian off-spinner Deepti Sharma bowled a flighted delivery outside off, which Ellyse Perry looked to hit over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a maximum. But the Australian batter didn’t time her stroke well, finding Smriti Mandhana camped under the high ball, but somehow, it popped out of her hands, and ricocheted into the boundary on the bounce for four runs.

But fortunately, for the cause of the Indian women’s team, Amanjot Kaur trapped Ellyse Perry in front of her stumps in the very next over for 16 off 9, giving the hosts the all-important second wicket of the day. Earlier in the Australian innings, the captain Alyssa Healy, who had decided to bat first, shared an opening stand of 189 runs within 29 overs alongside Phoebe Litchfield to put her team in a strong position.
As of this writing, Phoebe Litchfield, who had scored 119 off 125 with 16 fours and one maximum, was dismissed by Deepti Sharma after the Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur took a good catch. The Australian score read 256/5 in 40 overs with Ashleigh Gardner on 12 off 10 getting joined in the middle by Annabel Sutherland.
