The WTC final between India and Australia was not without its drama with many dropped catches, a tricky wicket, and a controversial decision from third umpire Richard Kettleborough who adjudged Shubman Gill out when Cameron Green went low to take the catch. Replays showed that the ball could have touched the ground and fans expressed their dissent by booing Kettleborough during the post-match ceremony.
The controversial decision took place on Day 4 when Gill edged one to Scott Boland and was given out just before the Tea break, which disrupted the strong opening partnership following Australia’s target-setting of 444 runs in the final innings. Shubman Gill himself expressed his disappointment on social media and was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching ICC's code of conduct.
In the post-match presentation, medals were handed to the match officials Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Richie Richardson, and Richard Kettleborough. As soon as Kettleborough's name was announced the crowd roared with dissent and booed the third umpire. Many fans, players, and ex-players have criticized the decision publicly on social media.
