World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury was forced to postpone the high-octane showdown with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury suffered a freak injury just above his right eye, while training in for the Riyadh fight earlier scheduled on February 17. Earlier, there were reports that the Brit pulled out of the fight after the injury, and American Featherweight fighter Daniel Pineda stepped in. However, as per Fury’s latest statement, the fight has been postponed.
The global sports entertainment company DAZN Group released a statement saying they will reimburse those who have already purchased the ticket. As per the statement, the cut opened the fighter’s right eye and required medical attention and stitching. The statement informed that the fighter will need some time for recovery, so the fight scheduled on February 17 has been postponed.
I am devastated: Tyson Fury after postponing Usyk clash
The 35-year-old released a statement and apologised to fans for postponing the fight. In the statement, the fighter said, "I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition. I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
The spokesperson’s statement read, “Whilst this is still breaking news it is clearly a massive disappointment, after the work that has been done by so many people to finally deliver this historic event to the world. Once the Doctors have appraised Tyson's eye, we will have a better idea of the period of recovery needed. Once known we will work diligently with all the stakeholders and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to reschedule this fight as soon as possible and will of course keep everyone updated with developments."
