With the FIFA World Cup 2022 just eight days away, football fans are picking their favourite teams in the marquee tournament. In these discussions, the Brazil national team has emerged as the choice for many people. But Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos still has some concerns regarding the Seleção Canarinha.
While talking to the Telegraph, the former Real Madrid left-back believes that the current Brazilian team doesn’t have the Jogo bonito essence in them. Jogo bonito, first popularised by Pele, and translated as ‘Beautiful Game’, has been the philosophy, on which Brazil have based their football which comprises flare, joy and creativity.
“We have lost our essence: O Jogo bonito,” said Carlos. “We used to attack as a team, but we defended much better [than we do now]. He further talked about the team from 2002 and said, “We attacked as a team, but we also defended much better than now. We were very confident in our positional play. We used to have confidence in terms of our positioning.”
Roberto Carlos further explained the expectations of any Brazilian team in a major tournament like the World Cup. He talked about how playing with joy and happiness has always been important for the fans but this time there is an expectation to win the trophy.
"The Brazil national team, both men’s and women’s, has always maintained a joyful atmosphere," Carlos explained. "They should understand that’s the only way to keep people happy, enjoying a great World Cup, having fun and bringing great joy to this country; Brazil, a football country. We haven’t won it for a long time, now it’s time to win the trophy. It’s a very special moment for football."
