Mirabai Chanu qualifies for 2024 Paris Olympics
Tokyo Olympics silver medallist and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Mirabai Chanu on Monday, April 1 qualified for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. The 29-year-old, who finished third in Group B of the women’s 49kg division at the IWF World Cup, became the first and only weightlifter from the country to qualify for the Games. Chanu finished at third place in Phuket, Thailand after a total lift of 184kg. The Indian weightlifter made her comeback at the international level on Monday, April 1 after a six-month injury-forced break.

Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu opened up after her six-month injury break and spoke about her expectations from Paris Olympics. Chanu said, “It feels incredible to come back after an injury. Almost every lift I made today felt clean, clear, and powerful, and I’m leaving this competition feeling strong and confident. The rehabilitation was tough and demanding, but with the support of everyone involved in my rehab and recovery, I pushed through all the complications.” Chanu added, “The goal was to secure my spot for the Paris Olympics, and now that I am almost through for the Paris Olympics, all my attention is on making a mark at the Paris Olympics.”

The tournament will kick off in Toronto on April 3, and Anand feels that the three Indian participants still have some way to go before participating to win the tournament. The five-time champion said, “The Indians are a long shot. If they can keep the tournament going that’s good enough. If a late opportunity presents itself, they can grab it. They should first settle into the tournament and try to play good games. Let the big decisions come later."

Barcelona teenager footballer Gullie Fernanded became the youngest footballer to feature for Barcelona Atletic after playing as a substitute. Fernandez was featured in Barcelona’s 3-2 comeback win over Osasuna Promesas. Lamine Yamal holds the record for being the youngest scorer in La Liga, the Champions League, and for Spain. He held the record for being the youngest debutant in Primera RFEF at the age of 15 years, 9 months, and 23 days. However, Fernandez surpassed Yama’s record by just 10 days.
AIFF suspends Deepak Sharma until further notice for physically assaulting two women players
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) suspended an executive committee member of the federation Deepak Sharma for allegedly assaulting two women footballers. Sharma misbehaved with two players of a club during their stay in Goa for the Indian Women’s League 2. AIFF released a statement on Tuesday and stated that the federation has decided to suspend Sharma until further notice. The official statement read, “The AIFF Executive Committee has decided to suspend Mr. Deepak Sharma from participating in any football-related activities until further notice.” Apart from this, the Goa police arrested Deepak Sharma along with registering an FIR under sections 323, 341 and 354A of the IPC.
