Haas announce signing of Alpine driver Esteban Ocon on multi-year contract

American F1 team Haas has announced the signing of French driver Esteban Ocon on a multiple-year contract from the 2025 season. Ocon will partner with F1 debutant and Ferrari reserve driver Oliver Bearman next year. The Frenchman previously worked with Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, as the Japanese se boss was Ocon's engineer in his first F1 test in 2014 with Lotus.  Ferrari-powered Haas entered Formula One in 2016 and are yet to win a race.

Eight-month suspended prison for Canada football staff for spying scandal at Paris 2024

In the build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, two coaching staff members of the Canadian women’s football team were given an eight-month suspended prison sentence after admitting to spying on New Zealand’s training session in Saint-Etienne using a drone. The decision came after the French authorities detained one of the Canadian staff members this week.  The court in Saint-Etienne confirmed to APF the admission of guilt from the Canadian coaching staff members.

Israel’s national anthem booed during football match vs Mali at Paris 2024

On Wednesday, July 24, Israel’s national anthem was booed by a few spectators flying Palestine flags at Parc des Princes in Paris ahead of their men’s football match against Mali at the Olympics. A few spectators were spotted with “Free Palestine” written on the front of their t-shirts during the Group D clash, which ended in a 1-1 draw.  The AFP reported that nearly 1,000 members of the French police were on duty for the Israel versus Mali football match as part of the security measures.

Real Madrid become first football club to generate €1 billion in revenue

Real Madrid have become the first football club in the world to generate a revenue of more than €1 billion ($1.08bn). According to the financial report for 2023-24, the Galacticos earned a whopping €1.073bn in revenue to be exact, 27% higher than last season, while their total gain was €230 million, but it didn’t include player transfer details.  It was reported that Real Madrid generated an after-tax profit of €16m, 32% higher in comparison to last season’s figure.

Andy Murray opts out of Paris Olympics 2024 men's singles; to only play doubles

Andy Murray, the British tennis star, has opted out of playing men’s singles at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which is the final career tournament before taking a retirement. The 37-year-old will only be playing alongside Dan Evans in the men’s doubles event in Paris, marking the end of his illustrious tennis career in the next fortnight or so.  Notably, Andy Murray had initially entered his name in both men’s singles and men’s doubles events, but he ultimately chose to focus on partnering up with Evans.

Jannik Sinner withdraws from Paris Olympics 2024 due to tonsillitis

World number 1 tennis star Jannik Sinner officially withdrew from the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday, July 24. The Italian took to X to inform his fans about it, revealing that he had decided to pull out of the tournament due to a bout of tonsillitis. Sinner reported the symptoms on Monday after a training session in Monaco, which ultimately led to his decision to withdraw from the sporting spectacle days before its commencement.
