Priya Malik becomes junior world champion; Panghal one win away from 2nd at U20 World Wrestling Champions 2023

India’s rising wrestler Priya Malik became the second Indian woman to win a junior world championship. Malik won gold at the 2023 U20 World Wrestling Champions in Jordan on Thursday, August 17. This was India’s second gold at the ongoing championships. Before Priya, Antim Panghal had been the only Indian woman to win gold and earn the prestigious title, as she won gold in last year’s edition of the championship. 

Indian recurve teams secure bronze at Stage 4 Archery World Cup 2023 

Continuing their winning streak, Indian recurve teams won bronze medals at the ongoing Archery World Cup in Paris. The men's recurve team consisting of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Prabhakar Shelke pipped Spain's Pablo Acha, Yun Sanchez, and Andres Temino 6-2 to win bronze. On the other hand, the women’s team of Simranjeet Kaur, Bhajan Kaur, and Ankita Bhakat defeated Mexico's Aida Roman, Alejandra Valencia and Angela Ruiz to secure the medal. 

Twila Kilgore joins US women’s football team as interim coach

After the US's exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, Twila Kilgore was appointed as the interim coach of the US women's football team. The USA’s former coach Vlatko Andonovski stepped down from the role after the team's defeat in the World Cup 2023. Notably, the team ended up getting knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16. 

R Praggnanandhaa becomes second Indian to reach World Cup semis

Youth Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa became the second Indian to reach the World Cup semifinals. Before the 18-year-old, it was only Viswanathan Anand who made it to the round of the prestigious tournament. The youngster registered a nail-biting win over his compatriot Arjun Erigaisi to make it to the next round of the prestigious tournament. 

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat undergoes successful knee surgery 

Indian star wrestler Vinesh Phogat underwent successful knee surgery on August 17, Thursday. Phogat suffered the injury while training, and due to it the wrestler had to pull out of the forthcoming Asian Games. Notably, Phogat, who was involved in the wrestlers’ protest against WFI Chief, got a direct entry into the competition. However, after the injury, she had to withdraw her name from the tournament. 

Close to breaching 90m barrier: Neeraj Chopra ahead of World Athletics Championships 2023

Indian Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw,  Neeraj Chopra said that he is close to breaching the 90m mark. Ahead of the World Athletics Championships 2023, Chopra said that he just needs to have perfect weather conditions to achieve the mark. In the Diamond League in Sweden, Chopra threw a javelin at 89.94 m and finished second. However, ahead of the competition, he said, “Definitely, I'm close. I just need one perfect day with favourable weather conditions and I am confident I'll be able to achieve the throw.”
