The hosts thereafter bundled out the visitors at the score of 253, taking a 143-run lead into the game. Shubman Gill’s century helped India built onto the lead as they eventually put 339 runs for England to win the second Test and go 2-0 up in the series. But to England’s surprise, the Indian bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah put up a brilliant performance and restrict visitors just 106 runs short.
With this win, the two-time World Test Championship finalists rose up to second place in the WTC 2023-25 cycle. Not only did the hosts levelled the series 1-1 going into the third Test in Rajkot, but they also clinched their third win in the WTC cycle from six matches.
The Rohit Sharma-led side have now reached 52.77 per cent and sit only behind Test champions Australia, who have 55 per cent from 10 Tests.
It is to be noted that the Indian team dropped to fifth place after their 28-run defeat against England in the opening Test of the five-match series. As of now with Sri Lanka also winning the Only Test against Afghanistan, while the Aussies and Indians secure the top two positions, South Africa are third, followed by New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, West Indies, England and Sri Lanka to complete the top nine.
