Sam Konstas, who is just 18 years of age, has been called-up for the first-time in the Australian cricket team in his young career, to potentially make his Test debut against India in the remaining two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in either Melbourne or Sydney. The teenage sensation has replaced opener Nathan McSweeney in the squad after latter’s struggles against the Indian fast bowlers, versus whom he has already scored a First-Class hundred at the turn of last month.
Notably, during the two-day warm-up match against the Indian cricket team, the right-handed batter got his second three-figure score in First-Class cricket for the PM’s XI under lights in a pink ball setting. With his enterprising innings, which was put together at better than a run-a-ball, the New South Welshman staked a claim for a place in the Australian Test squad, and after waiting for two more matches, he has finally been picked in the team.
In his young career, which began just over 12 months ago, Sam Konstas has played 11 First-Class matches, scoring 718 runs with two hundreds and three fifties at an average of 42.23, but it was more his talent and ability, which got rewarded by the Australian national selection committee at such a young age. After taking part in his first and only List A game for New South Wales last month, he has also scored a fifty at double quick time on his T20 debut in the BBL for Sydney Thunder against Adelaide Strikers just a couple of days ago.
