India’s Sheetal Devi on Tuesday, November 28, jumped two places to become World No. 1 in the latest ranking released by the World Archery. The Indian para-athlete added another feather to the cap following her ‘Best Youth Athlete of the Year’ award by the Asian Paralympic Committee in Riyadh.
The armless archer jumped two places to reach the top place in the latest rankings with 230 points, putting her way above the second placed para-archer Jane Karla Gogel of Brazil, who has 195 points. The 16-year-old archer, who hails from Jammu & Kashmir, is notably the first female archer to compete internationally without arms.
The Indian athlete is said to be born with phocomelia, a rare disorder that causes under development of limbs. The young archer won three medals including two golds and one silver in the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou. The native of the Loi Dhar village in Kishtwar district of J&K, she also became the first Indian women to win two yellow metals in a single edition of the Asian Para Game 2023.
