Rohit Sharma, the Indian Test captain, 37, is in the twilight of his international career, and he is under pressure as a leader after his team lost a Test series at home for the first-time in 12 years against New Zealand, getting whitewashed 0-3. With that, there have been rumours around how long can Rohit Sharma continue playing for India in the whites, with some stating that the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series down under against Australia could be his last.

If that’s the case, then the Indian cricket team will be needing a new captain to take the Test side into the future, which might turn out to be quite an arduous process for the selectors with multiple options at their disposal. Moreover, Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test of the BGT at the Optus Stadium from November 22 onwards, isn’t confirmed after he didn’t travel with the Indian squad to Perth due to the birth of his second child in Mumbai, which could allow vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah to lead the team in his absence.

In this article, SportsTiger looks at who will lead Team India in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma is no longer the captain of the side.

Jasprit Bumrah is the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series down under against Australia, and as of this writing, he is expected to captain the side in the first Test with Rohit Sharma’s status for the contest not yet confirmed. The Indian fast bowler has already captained the national team in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who was tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2022 before a Test match  against England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, which the visitors lost.
