Also called the El Clasico of South America; Argentina versus Brazil is always one of the most heated fixtures in international football. And this footballing spectacle is set to return on 26 March 2025, with Argentina hosting Brazil at the Estadio Monumental in Bueno Aires. However, there are some big names which are set to miss this massive showdown as Argentina will be without star player and skipper Lionel Messi, while for Brazil, their top goal-scorer Neymar Jr. will also miss out this match. Neymar, who was called up to the national team after almost 17 months, suffered an injury blow during his club matches with Santos FC earlier in March this year.
He even missed Santos FC’s semi-final match of the Campeonato Paulista against Corinthians and his team ended up losing 1-2. He had even issued a statement after that match mentioning that he wanted to help his team, however he was feeling discomfort even after going through tests to check the issue. This isn’t the first time that Neymar Jr. has been troubled with injury.
Argentina can seal their 2026 World Cup spot with a draw over Brazil
Neymar has had an injury-ridden past few years after he moved to the Saudi side Al-Hilal from PSG. The forward made a move to the Middle East in August 2023 but has since played only seven games in his one and a half season tenure. He recently moved to his boyhood club Santos on a short-term six-month deal where he had a good start to life.
Argentina lead the CONMEBOL qualifying table and can secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup with at least a draw against Brazil. Brazil, currently third, will aim to end a six-year winless streak against Argentina and solidify their qualification prospects. However, they will definitely miss the services of their top-goal scorer Neymar Jr.
Predicted line-ups:
Argentina (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico; De Paul, Mac Allister; Simeone, Fernández, Almada; Álvarez.
Brazil (4-2-3-1): Bento; Wesley, Marquinhos, Murillo, Guilherme Arana; André, Joelinton; Raphinha, Rodrygo, Vinícius Júnior; Matheus Cunha.
