On Wednesday, November 27, Indian GM Dommaraju Gukesh defeated GM Ding Liren of China in game three of the World Chess Championship match in Singapore, to level the scoreline at 1.5-1.5. After losing the first game and drawing the second one, challenger Dommaraju Gukesh needed to get the better of reigning world champion Ding Liren, which he managed to accomplish with the white pieces in a time scramble, to make a comeback in the match going into the first rest day.
In the opening phase of game three in the World Chess Championship 2024 match, Dommaraju Gukesh created problems for Ding Liren, who managed to get himself out of a tricky situation. After that, when the world champion was seemingly looking to take control in the high octane contest, he had a massive blunder, forced to give up his bishop for just two pawns of Dommaraju Gukesh.

It led to the Indian GM finding himself in a great situation, to win the first game of the World Chess Championship 2024 match, but he found it quite tricky to convert. Ultimately, Ding Liren collapsed under the pressure of time, not able to play out the requisite number of moves in the game three in a massive scramble, which meant that his advantage in the match evaporated all of a sudden.
During his interview in the post-game analysis, Dommaraju Gukesh was happy about his play in the evening, talking about how he managed to outskill the world champion. He was quoted as saying, as per Times of India, “It feels great! Also the last two days I was happy with my play, today was even better. I feel good at the board. Today I just managed to outplay my opponent. During the game we both thought that White was doing well, which is what matters... As long as I played better than my opponent, it's good.”
