World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has published a report, titled “Protecting History, Embracing Change: A Unified, Coherent, Global Future” wherein they have made some recommendations to improve what they call the “broken global structure” of cricket. One of the biggest suggestions from WCA is to reduce the share of BCCI in the ICC revenue from nearly 40% to just 10%, with an aim to re-establish ICC as a global governing body of cricket and not a members’ club.

Notably, as per ESPNcricinfo, the WCA report states that they not only want to see the ICC to reduce the revenue share of the BCCI, but also introduce an interim independent global leadership body to help modernise the former. They pointed out the need for international cricket to have a promotion and relegation system with multiple divisions, to give associate nations a better chance at success in the sport.

We look forward to discussing and debating the report over the coming months: WCA Chairman

Some of the other suggestions in the report published by WCA sought better regulation in regards to player movements across T20 leagues, apart from optimising the cricket calendar to produce extra USD 200 million or more annually to bolster the economy of the sport. They also insisted on the need to have four 21-day protected windows for “Core International Cricket”, wherein no league cricket will take place all over the world.

Heath Mills, the WCA Chairman, gave his take on the latest report from his organisation, saying that, “This process has brought to light an almost game wide appetite for change and a need to address the significant issues with the game's global structure. Whilst there is no silver bullet, the report defines the trends, and major issues facing the sport at global level, along with some recommended solutions, intended to be both aspirational and realistic. The players have an interest in the health of the game globally, and we look forward to discussing and debating the report over the coming months.”

Furthermore, the WCA also insisted that their report should be looked upon as a start of discussion around what the future of cricket should look like.
