The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday, 16th January opened up to set up a dialogue with the Indian Sports Ministry over revocation of suspension. The Chief of the WFI, Sanjay Singh spoke of setting up talks with the Ministry and further added that legal steps will be taken if the talks fail.

“We do not want a clash with the government. We are not moving courts as of today. We will seek time from the ministry and a delegation will try and speak with the government,” suspended WFI Chief Sanjay Singh told PTI.

The suspended body had earlier initiated to move to the court but later hosted an Executive Council meeting, chaired by President Sanjay Singh and 12 other members.  “First we have to try. We want to know what we need to do to get the suspension lifted. Like UWW had set certain conditions when it had suspended. The ground was not holding elections. The government has suspended us but there is no clarity on how it will be lifted,” he further added.

He also added that the committee had written to the Ministry, but a reply is still awaited. However, he confirmed that a delegation will be set up to lift the suspension.

The Indian Sports Ministry had earlier in December 2023 suspended the newly elected body due to violation of National Sports Code and the WFI constitution.  Thereafter, the Indian Olympic Association was handed the charge and formed an ad-hoc panel consisting of three members to handle the working of the suspended body.

However, the ad-hoc panel has named a 13-member Indian team for the Zagreb Open, which is the first ranking series seeing the Olympic Games scheduled later this year. Moreover, the senior Nationals will be held in Jaipur from February 3, while the age group championships will be held in Gwalior.
